Chapter 2: The deputy

This chapter summarizes current constitutional design regarding the deputy. It is based on the review of national constitutions and seeks to establish a common ground for writing and amending constitutions. The free mandate, its limitation and protection with respect to financial support and (in)compatibility with other occupations form equally part of this evaluation as an in-depth look into immunity and indemnity clauses, their safeguards and different treatment in civil and common law countries. This chapter forms part of Vol. I of Writing Constitutions.
